Asst/Assoc/Full Professor

Academic Appointment

Full-time faculty position with appointment at the level of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in the Native American Center for Cancer Health Equity at Stephenson Cancer Center (SCC), University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC).  As SCC is a matrix cancer center, successful applicants will be appointed in an academic department relevant to their area of expertise. Rank and tenure eligibility to be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications

Doctoral-level degree in a health-related field. Assistant Professor level applicants should have a strong academic record, with evidence of scholarship and show strong potential for acquiring extramural funding. Associate/Full Professor level applicants should have a strong record of extramural funding. All applicants should demonstrate experience in, and/or commitment to, advancing work in tribal communities. Thus, an ability to work independently and collaboratively within a dynamic, inter-disciplinary environment that has expertise in engaging with tribal communities and healthcare systems to improve health outcomes is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Research in one or more of the following areas is preferred:

  • Native American health disparities in cancer and/or health promotion research
  • Ethics of tribal research and/or indigenous research methodologies
  • Health services or intervention research
  • Social determinants of heath
  • Community-engaged or community-based participatory research with an indigenous community or communities

Evidence of effective teaching, including the potential to supervise and mentor graduate students and contribute to the training of clinician investigators is preferred.

Salary

These faculty positions offer extremely competitive salaries (e.g., Assistant Professor level starts at $125,000 + quarterly bonus) and come with generous start-up packages. Rank and salary to be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  

Areas of Responsibility

  • Build and maintain collaborative research partnerships with Oklahoma tribal communities
  • Grow a funded cancer research portfolio with IHS/Tribal/Urban health care and/or tribal public health systems
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of robust infrastructure across OU campuses for tribal engagement and partnerships
  • Support the OUHSC strategic plan and priority goals related to: 1) Becoming a Top‐Tier Research‐Driven Academic Health Center, and 2) Improving Health Outcomes and Reducing Health Disparities in Oklahoma.

General Information

The NCI Designated SCC is Oklahoma’s only academic cancer center. With a well-developed and supportive infrastructure and over 200 research members from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, OU Norman, and several other entities, the SCC places a high priority on promoting research that reduces cancer health disparities affecting Oklahomans. SCC investigators conduct numerous tribally engaged research projects to reduce the heavy impact of cancer on Native American persons. Current tribally engaged studies include projects to evaluate the implementation of evidence-based cancer screening services in Indian Health Service, tribal, and urban Indian healthcare facilities, studies to understand and address the ethical, legal and social implications of research involving sovereign Tribal Nations, pilot work to address financial hardship shouldered by Native American persons with cancer, and several others. This growing research portfolio provides a solid base of research in which successful applicants will be able to develop their interests.
